Medicaid is health
insurance for the poor. In order to qualify, an
individual must have income and assets that are below a
certain level established by law. If income or asset
values exceed these limits, the Medicaid Application
will be denied. In order to qualify for Medicaid in
Michigan, you must submit a multiple-page application
and provide detailed proof of all of your financial
transactions and assets for up to 60 months prior to
filing of the application.
The laws and regulations
concerning the Medicaid program are extensive and many
times confusing. There are many requirement and
exceptions which must be considered and addressed in
order to properly present a case for coverage. Many
times nursing homes and hospitals will offer to
determine qualification of an individual for Medicaid
coverage. However the people who offer such assistance
are working for the hospital or nursing home, not for
you or your family. In many cases they do not have the
expertise to fully evaluate complicated financial
situations, especially where a married couple is
involved and one spouse is in or will be going to a
nursing home and the other spouse will remain in the
community.
